Life Update – Finishing Uni and Post-Uni Life

I feel like I need to introduce myself again, as it has been a while since I was last here… So hi I’m Megan, and welcome back to my little corner of the internet!

I thought today I would come back to my blog and delve into finishing uni and the post-uni life. My absence from my blog this year was mainly due to me finishing my final year, studying BA (Hons) English at Bournemouth University.

The start of my final year seems like a distant memory now, but sadly the academic year was cut short due to the pandemic. For many students like me, we were completely unaware which lectures would be our last and knowing when our final time on campus would be. Unfortunately, the many plans and celebrations I had for finishing uni were cancelled and the classic dissertation photo had to be done from home instead.

It was extremely daunting going home to finish the last coursework assignments and the majority of my dissertation. Lockdown was difficult for everyone, but life adjusted, and the constant Zoom calls became a normality. Nevertheless, it was a huge relief handing in my dissertation after what felt like the longest months of constant reading and writing!

After a few weeks passed, the dreaded words of ‘have you got your results yet?’ loomed over me; a pressure that a lot of students experience for receiving the ‘perfect grade’. However, results day finally came, and I am proud to say I have graduated with a First-Class Honours Degree in English and a First in my dissertation, which explored:

‘What Else in Being Bought in Social Media Advertising: the Marketing of Identity and Relations Between Influencer and Platform.’

Fair to say that there was a lot of happy tears on results day! 😊  With many virtual celebratory Zoom calls and FaceTimes!

Bournemouth University was a fantastic experience, with many highs and lows but overall an amazing journey that I will cherish and look back on with fond memories.

Post-Uni Life -

So, I have the degree…what next?

I feel like not many people speak about post-uni life and the societal pressure that surrounds it. How there is an unspoken expectation for students to go into their dream job straight away. As well as the ‘graduate blues’ that hits students, where the structure and familiarity of uni life is taken away.

After I had finished, I was extremely fortunate to be asked to go back to work for a company where I had previously done my placement. My contract for them was only for a few months however, and as soon as I had finished I felt extremely lost and anxious not knowing what was next.

But I think it is good to speak honestly about the experience after university and how it is ok not to have it completely together. Everyone has their own journey and timing, so for now, the job search continues and onto the next chapter!
